the exploded mind of Mulholland Hwang
This collaborative effort between myself and my old studio mate Aaron Ruff was born from seeing some really bad art in a restaurant of a giant squid fighting a sperm whale.
Why was it, we wondered, that animals pitted together in imaginary battles were always of the large and aggressive variety?
We created a fictional and not- terribly- aggressive twelve- year old boy who was more interested in the fate of the less violent creatures, and explored his fertile mind. A series of drawings and models, growing in size the further they got away from his place of working ( his bedroom) depicted scenes of the moments before animals, not usually associated with aggression, do battle. He wrestles with the world' s fascination to uncover hierarchies between species.
