In 2008 my second picture book, Lost and Found was adapted into a BAFTA winning short film by Studio AKA, directed by Philip Hunt. I worked closely with Philip and the studio throughout...
...producing early set drawings and storyboard concepts
...how the characters might look and react in different scenarios...
...developing new characters that hadn't existed before...
...drawing some of the animals that would appear in the pet shop...
...what my version of a school of fish under the boat would look like...
... and my drawings of how the additional octopus element of the story might look.
I also created all the insidental artwork in the film, for example...
... all the book covers the boy thumbs through in the library...
...including the pivotal WHERE PENGUINS COME FROM book...
...right down to the front of the newspaper the sailor is reading on the large boat that ignores the boy.
I made all of the shop signs scattered throught the seaside town where the boy lived
He would need a map to navigate to the South pole, so I made that as well.
And, of course, the sign welcoming him there when he arrived.
Another addition to the film was the photobooth scene, which I got to design...
...and the poster advertising itself.
